Habitat restoration
Hugelkultur mounds are a form of permaculture that use wood piles in the soil to increase water retention, temperature regulation, microbial growth, air, and carbon leading to a much healthier, stress resistant plot of land. As the wood in the ground is decomposed, carbon and nutrients are released slowly into the soil over 20 to 30 years. In addition, the wood acts as a sponge, absorbing large amounts of water and forming air pockets. This creates the perfect habitat for soil organisms and plants to thrive in any environment.
Targeting flood prone meadows, our team is building hugelkultur mounds like this to maximize the success of our native plant reintroductions, even over long periods of drought.
