Hügelkulturs

Hügelkultur mounds are a traditional form of permaculture that originate from ancient German and Eastern European cultures. This practice uses dead trees and plant material as a source of organic matter for building a soil bed. Simply cover some logs and plant material with any soil and you have yourself a hugelkultur. The wood and plant material will then begin to slowly breakdown over the next 30 years offering a continuous supply of nutrients and carbon to the land and plants. In addition, this wood creates large air pockets and retains significantly more water than a traditional bed promoting microbial growth and allowing plants to thrive even during drought conditions.
